Martin Carrico Spends a Year in Sydney Australia

I'm fortunate enough to have dual citizenship in Australia, and shortly after a distant relative passed back in the late 1980's, the family hopped on a Qantas flight to Sydney for a 2 weeks stay in North Sydney, near the famous 'Luna Park'.

The difference between this vacation and others prior, was that I ended up staying in New South Wales for almost a year, enjoying all that Sydney had to offer.

Our condo upon arrival was right on the edge of the water overlooking the Harbour Bridge with a panoramic view of Circular Quay, the Opera House, and the picturesque skyline of downtown Sydney.

Sydney is San Francisco's 'sister' city, with sparkling waters, and a vast ferry system that transports residents and tourists all over the sprawling city.

There are many ways to have fun in Sydney, and taking the trip to the boardwalk on Manly Beach on the Hydrofoil should definitely be on the top of your list.

Martin Carrico: A Close Call for the Ultimate Life Changing Payday

Martin Carrico began playing poker back in 2003 like many young American men dreaming of a life not bound by mediocrity slaving away in the living hell of a cubicle.

Initially, Martin was a rookie 'fish' losing money hand over fist, but eventually found his groove as a skilled multi-table tournament player chalking up over $100,000 in deep field tournament cashes with several impressive wins, and a close call in arguably the premier tournament online, The Sunday Million on Poker Stars.

Martin was the decisive chip leader with 15 players remaining out of just under 4000 entries, all who paid $215.00 for a seat at the prestigious tournament, then disaster struck.

Most poker players would refer to the hand as a 'cooler', and in Martin's case, that is a huge understatement. Only a micro stakes player at the time, a Sunday Million was literally the holy grail of online poker. A win was unthinkable, but within reach. His heart was pounding, and the adrenaline pumping, his face only inches from the screen, intent on taking down the six figure prize, and bragging rights.

With just under $160,000 on the line, 'set over set' was the dagger in the heart at the most critical point of the tourney down to (2) short handed tables when the action (and aggression) was fast and furious, with everything on the line.

Raising it up with 10/10 six handed, the small blind re-pops with authority, but Martin Carrico makes the conservative flat call to see the 10/J/x dream flop.

It's was a quick back and forth slug-fest on the flop, with all the chips going in, but when the cards are turned up, Martin gets smacked in the face, a head rush, and drops to the floor with a deep sigh.

A Heartbreaking Close Call for 13th Place

The set of Jacks ripped his heart out, sending him packing in 13th place for a mere $5200.00 or so dollars. A weak consolation prize when only a few minutes before he was poised for the 160K knockout blow, completely dominating the field.

Live to fight another day.

That is the amazing thing about poker, is you can always get back in the ring and keep slugging it out until that one day, when it matters the most, the cards fall your way and you catch a few rivers.

Everything changes.

Many of the 'name pros' got where they are today because of that one big win that put them into their 'comfort zone', to exploit low stakes and pad their bankrolls. When your skill level reaches a certain point in poker, the only thing standing between you and success is personal discipline.

Martin took it all in stride and went on to chalk up multiple wins over the next year in deep field (MTT's) and before "Black Friday", was set to dominate the micro and medium stakes rebuys on PokerStars, eventually finding his niche'

Results Summary

The screen shots tell the story, proving without a shadow of a doubt, that Martin Carrico was poised to break out and become a profitable and consistent performer in medium stakes online tournament poker.

Black Friday changed all that of course, but Martin continues to dominate low stakes live cash games, and waits patiently in the wings for the return of legalized online poker.

Such an amazing city. I visited Recife many times while working as a Chief Steward aboard the MV Sea Wolf for Crowley American Transport.

Recife is a mysterious, and intoxicating city and probably my favorite place, and most memorable experience in my travels. The women are incredible, the food delicious, and the beaches pristine.

I visited Recife 4 times while working on the Sea Wolf over the course of a 160 day contract. Immediately after a quick stop back in California after my stint was finished, I hopped a plane for Sao Paulo and went back for an unforgettable 8 week stay.

Martin Carrico: Stepping Off the Plane in Honolulu

Beginning back in 1983, I moved (actually 'fled' from Sacramento) to Hawaii 3 days after graduating at El Camino High School to enjoy the summer at Waikiki beach before starting at the University of Hawaii, at Manoa, the 'Rainbow Warriors'.

Without a scholarship, or substantial cash reverses, my first few months were on a shoestring budget, but I was thrilled to be in the islands. Hawaii is a very special place, and I dreamed of leaving home since about my sophomore year of high school. I suppose part of it was due to a typical 'dysfunctional' childhood and textbook teenage angst, but I would attribute most of it due to surging testosterone and because it was time to leave the proverbial nest.

Martin Carrico is a Sacramento native who graduated from El Camino High School in 1983 and went on to attend the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Martin has traveled extensively.
